9.) Ellison Building, 156 Main Street, 1990
This
is a two-story wood frame Neo-Colonial Revival commercial building. The building
was constructed in 1990 and is in very good condition. It replaced a ca. 1840s
building that was constructed as a 2 ½ story front-gable Greek revival store
with a centered front entry. In the 1860s, it was a clothing store operated by
Charles Raymond, and then was the clothing store of Charles Mason. By the end of
the 19th century, it was a general store, and in the 1910s, it was converted to
a grocery store. The building reportedly suffered a fire about 1924, and the
gabled roof was replaced with a flat-roofed third story with an Italianate
cornice. (The Italianate cornice suggests an earlier date, however.) The third
story was removed by 1963, leaving a two-story flat-roofed building. This
building suffered from a fire in 1989 and was replaced by the extant building,
which has similar massing to that of the first building.
